Dubai rolls out free ‘Bread for All’ initiative using vending machines
Those in need in Dubai will now be able to access free fresh bread via smart vending machines as part of a new initiative.
Bread for All is a new programme launched by the Mohammed bin Rashid Global Centre for Endowment Consultancy (MBRGCEC).
Vending machines can be found outside Aswaaq supermarkets, a partner of the Bread For All project. The touchscreen machines are refilled twice a day with dough by supermarket staff. Those using them can choose between two options: Arabic-style bread and finger rolls.
Some 10 locations have been set up so far, and there are plans to increase this in the next six months – both elsewhere in Dubai and in other Emirates.
The aim of the initiative is to provide for Dubai’s poor families and underprivileged workers. Eliminating hunger throughout the UAE and boosting food security has been a focus for the country’s leaders for some time.
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai stressed his aim that “in the UAE, no one sleeps hungry or in need”.
Individuals who want to donate to the cause can financially support Bread for All by doing so at the vending machines. Donations can also be made on the MBRGCEC website.
Ali Al Mutawa, Secretary General of the Authority of Islamic Affairs & Endowments and Minors Affairs Foundation (AMAF) said: “This initiative is an exemplary model for an innovative community endowment that allows everyone to participate, creating a comprehensive charity movement and enhancing the spirit of solidarity among various social segments.“
Affan Khouri, Deputy CEO of Aswaaq, added: “We are delighted to partner with MBRGCEC on the Bread for All initiative, which creates a social safety net where everyone collaborates to extend a helping hand to underprivileged families, individuals, and labourers. We look forward to providing bread to those in need at several supermarket branches across Dubai.”
