Those who choose to work in the science and technology industry are at the forefront of solving some of the most important issues of today’s world. They perform essential research and are at the forefront of innovation in the technological space.

The world’s population is growing rapidly (and predicted to be 9 billion by 2050). More people on the planet means more food is needed to feed everyone. We will need 45,000 skilled scientists in the food and drink industry over the next decade to respond to these challenges.

There is a wide variety of different roles available, and these are only growing with science and technology professionals being found in almost every sector. Read on to find what options are out there.

Why might you enjoy a scientific role in the food industry?

“It’s not always appreciated just how sophisticated the science is that goes into making food delicious and safe. Our laboratories here in RSSL for example, have equipment that is extremely highbrow, takes a lot of investment, and would be akin to any other chemistry or scientific field. It is very challenging, and compared to a lot of other matrices, food has to be safe, nice-tasting, and consumers have to love it, so you have a number of additional scientific and intellectual challenges than you might have working in any other sector.” – Jacinta George, Managing Director, Reading Scientific Services Ltd

Is a degree in biochemistry, biotechnology or biological science your starting point?
