Dr. Berber Vlieg-Boerstra is an allergy specialist dietitian with a longstanding interest and expertise in dietary management of allergic disease, such as food allergy, eczema, hay fever and allergic asthma.

She has been counselling patients of all ages since 1987.

Her research started in 2001 with her PhD. She is currently affiliated to the Paediatric Department of OLVG hospital and Allergy Center Rijnstate at Rijnstate hospital in the Netherlands.

During the past 10 years she has been working on the enhancement of the immune function by diet and nutrition in allergic disease to improve dietary management and prevention.

In 2023 the concept of the immune-supportive diet, which is based on whole foods with specific immune enhancing properties, was published in Allergy and was developed in collaboration with international nutritionists, dietitians and scientists. The immune-supportive diet is currently being studied in several ongoing intervention studies in the Netherlands in children and adults with allergic disease
