Leading functional ingredients producer BENEO is quadrupling the storage capacity of its German production facility in Offstein, near Mannheim, to improve its business contingency and efficiency.

The new addition to the original warehouse, which opened in February 2022, will be able to store over 8,500 Euro pallets and is situated closeby to the packaging and shipment operations already located at the Offstein production site.

By expanding the storage capacity at the facility, the need for transportation will also be reduced as more BENEO products can be stored on site.

BENEO is the producer of crystalline functional carbohydrates Isomalt, Palatinose™ and galenIQ™, which are sourced from sugar beets located close to the production plant. The benefits of the products include their low glycaemic index, which make them popular ingredients for dairy, sports nutrition products, bakery items, cereals, and special nutrition products.

As well as sugar beet, the company also develops functional ingredients from natural goods such as chicory root fibre, rice, and plant-based proteins, which can be used in food as well as pharmaceutical and animal feed applications.

Due to their crystalline form, the ingredients can survive in humid conditions and temperature-monitored environments in the warehouse.

Dr. Ralph Cartarius, Operation Managing Director at BENEO’s Offstein facility, said: “The new warehouse gives much more storage potential for our functional carbohydrates. It also, helps us to gain cost, time and logistics efficiencies, as well as bolstering our business contingency strategy still further. Previously, the majority of our crystalline Palatinose™, Isomalt and galenIQ™ was stored externally, as the onsite facilities were limited. This expansion increases our supply security and reduces transport, but it also saves valuable time and energy for us to redirect into other operations.”

The BENEO warehouse in Offstein was first opened to produce Isomalt in 1989, with its first expansion taking place in 2002 in advance of Palatinose™ and galenIQ™ being launched in 2005. It is owned by the Südzucker Group.

Other production sites can also be found in Belgium, Chile, Germany and Italy. The company currently employs over 1000 people.
