Plant-based egg start-up Perfeggt has announced that its pre-seed funding round has increased to more than €3.6M.

Investors contributing to the funding include Gorillas founders, Jörg Kattner, Kağan Sümer, and Ronny Shibley, spice-mix brand Just Spices, fitness foods company Foodspring, MyMuesli, Dr. Albert Schmidbauer, the founder of nutritional supplement producer Biogena, founder of the Atomico Angels Fund, Deepali Nangia, and tech-focused VC Urania Ventures.

The funding will be used to expand the team, improve R&D, and prepare Perfeggt’s plant-based egg for its future launch onto the market.

CEO and co-founder of Perfeggt, Tanja Bogumil, said: “Together, our goal is to transform the food industry and to challenge the way we produce and consume one of the most popular animal products – the egg. The overwhelming positive reaction to Perfeggt over the past few months shows that the market is ready.”

The company’s R&D team worked together with researchers at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, to test out different plant-based proteins and find which ones had the best texture and were the easiest to flavour in order to recreate the same mouthfeel and taste as chicken eggs.

Deepali Nangi, founder of Atomico Angels Fund said: “The fact that Perfeggt, as a pioneer, is focused on creating egg alternatives interested me in two ways. Firstly, when it comes to the future of food production, plant-based, sustainable food is hugely important. Secondly for many of us a diet that reduces animal products brings health benefits.”

The recent funding round builds on the company’s successful €2.8M round, which they secured in November 2021.
